First Baptist Duluth Weekday Preschool was established in 1967, nearly 50 years ago, as a ministry to our growing community. It grew and changed over the years from two Kindergarten classes to include classes for children as young as one.

I was privileged to serve as the sixth program Director from 2007-2013. My employment did not begin as the Director but as a teacher in two year old classes (from 1996-2001) and six years as the Assistant Director (2001-2007). One of the things I love about our program is the relationships our staff form with the families we serve.

It is the school’s mission to “demonstrate the love of Christ to our children and their families through meaningful relationships that support developmentally appropriate learning.” Each parent understands that the goal of the program is to support growth in five distinct areas; social, emotional, physical, spiritual, and cognitive. I believe maintaining this balance is what distinguishes this program from all of the others in the area. First Baptist attracts men and women who love God and thoroughly enjoy providing meaningful activities for children in a safe, loving atmosphere

The population of the program has changed dramatically and is a reflection of our county and our city. This program provides children a wide variety of cultural experiences as they see various lunches and snacks brought in by their classmates, as they notice how others dress, hear multiple languages spoken, and view how parents from cultures relate to their children.

We live in a very dynamic cultural area, and this program is ahead of most in the ethnic diversity of the staff and their commitment to excellence. I feel very blessed to have had a part in the program and know that it is in capable hands of SoYoung Lee and her staff today.
